A Portatone is equipped with a Dual Architectural Synthesis System (DASS) tone generator, which effectively and realistically expresses instrument sounds through the combination of FM and AWM tone generators.
With the ability to edit attack, decay, and other parameters, this keyboard is as functional as a synthesizer, and paved the way for the Yamaha Style keyboards to come.
Like its brother, the , the PSR-4500 is based on 12-bit PCM waveforms and 2-operator FM synthesis. It came out around the same time as the , , and synthesizers and has a similar voice architecture. Rather than having standard pitch and modulation wheels, it has roll bars on the front that control modulation effects.
