2. Locate your Eprom socket and note the notch orientation.

3. Pull up the Eprom

4. Insert the new eprom with the notch in the same direction as you noted in point 2.

his is firmware update 3.87 and is the latest official released operation system by Kurzweil. This operation system update/upgrade requires two eprom chips as revealed in the article`s photos and the chips will be labeled to help you locate the correct chip socket. For more info, please check below.

There are 2 different versions of the K2000/K2000R/K2VP/K2VX Engine Board and Operating System - Janis and Calvin. When you upgrade the OS, you must install the correct software. To find out what version you have now, watch the display when you power up the instrument. If there is a "J" after the version number in the display, you have a Janis unit, and need OS 3.87J Eproms. If there is no letter after the version number, you have a Calvin unit, and need OS 3.87 Eproms.

Setup Eproms: Note: If the K2000/K2000R is running Version 1.x OS software, and neither the Orchestral nor Contemporary sound ROMs have been installed, the Setup sockets will be empty. You must install Setup Eproms when upgrading to OS 3.87. Note: If the K2000/K2000R has one or both of the sound ROMs (Orchestral and/or Contemporary), it will already have the correct version of the Setup Eproms. If you don't know which version of Setup Eproms the unit has, open up the unit and look. The OS and Setup Eproms are next to each other on the Engine Board. If you don't know how to open up a K2000 or K2000R, email me and ask for help.

More about Setup Eproms
If you have an OS earlier than 2.00 (ie 1.3), the setup info is incorporated into the OS Eproms ( means you don't have any Setup Eproms installed). You need to purchase Setup Eproms when upgrading to OS 3.87.
If you have an OS 2.00 and higher, you already have Setup EPROMs.

There are two routes to go when it comes to setup EPROMs:
1) Original K2000 presets 1-199 (3rd World Order, Stereo Grand, etc)
2) K2500 presets 1-199 (Acoustic Piano, Stage Piano, Brite Piano. etc)

Here are the original K2000 presets:
Setup Eproms Version 1.3   = 1-199 (no ROM blocks installed)
Setup Eproms Version 1.00 = 1-199 plus 900-999 (Orchestral ROM block installed)
Setup Eproms Version 3.00 = 1-199 plus 800-899 (Contemporary ROM block installed)
Setup Eproms Version 4.00 = 1-199 plus 800-999 (both ROM blocks installed)

Here are the "K2500" presets:
Setup Eproms Version 6.00 VP = 1-199 (no ROM blocks installed)
Setup Eproms Version 5.00 VX = 1-199 plus 600-999 (must have PRAM option and both ROM blocks installed)
There is not an intermediate step between no ROMs and both ROMs for the "K2500" presets. It is either ROM1 and ROM2 or no ROMs.

There are many improvements in the 3.87 Operating System from previous versions. Among them are the Disk Mode Enhancements; faster SCSI read/write times, improved compatibility with a greater variety of SCSI devices including CD-ROM drives, hard drives, Zip/Jaz drives, 2GB support for SCSI hard drives, the ability to read more Sample CDs (ISO formats), now reads K2500 programs, and supports looped wav files.
